Welcome to Portals Projects! Each week we share projects that foster community building, creative thinking, problem-solving and character development. Invite your student(s) to pick a project that interests them to work on for a day or a week. Encourage them to share their plans, products or performances with the Portals community so we can all celebrate and grow together.

Week 5 - Servant’s Heart

Ephesians 6:7-8 Serve with a good attitude, as to the Lord and not to people, knowing that whatever good each one does, slave or free, he will receive this back from the Lord.

Super Volunteer

You can formally volunteer somewhere or you can simply commit to doing something to regularly serve your community. Volunteering is a great way to explore different careers and find out your God given talents and interests! Write a poem or perform a skit based on your volunteer experience.

Secret Servant

Pick someone you know, neighbor, parent, teacher, classmate, or sibling, and notice something useful you could help them with. Without being caught, help them with whatever you noticed and watch to see how they react.

Closed Captioning Catastrophe

Challenge: The closed captioning isn’t working on our video, how fast and how accurately can you transcribe everything that’s said?

Materials: Paper and writing utensil and video

Time: 6 minutes

Scoring:

Level 1: Transcribed part of the video

Level 2: Transcribed the whole video but it is very unclear

Level 3: Transcribed the whole video by paraphrasing

Level 4: Transcription has a few errors, but no meaning is lost

Level 5: Transcription is entirely accurate with no errors

Disability Design

The metal ramp outside of our church is often slippery when it rains or gathers condensation. What kind of covering would produce the most friction so wheelchairs and walkers aren’t sliding down it? Is it cost effective? What is the cheapest solution to keep people from slipping the best?

Solution Criteria:

  • Tested prototype

  • Estimated cost per foot

A New Culture!

Imagine you are an explorer and you have discovered a new land. You see what appear to be humans in the distance walking towards you. Make a drawing of what they look like and design and make what they are wearing out of paper or cloth. It can be as realistic or fantastical as you want.

What are your favorite projects so far? We would love to see pictures!
