You can choose when you start, when to take breaks, and when you would like to wrap up your year. Using your own Bible curriculum? You will also be able to select which, if not all, subject areas you want access to on your dashboard. Lesson plans also include the option to provide feedback to our team so we can continue to provide you with the best lesson plans possible.
Bible
How will you teach Bible?
1) Completely - Helping you teach every word twice over 13 years.
2) Fearlessly - allowing you to build doctrinal truth without undue shaping via Portals.
3) Lovingly - We guide you to treat the Bible as God's inspired and perfect Truth for his children.
"In the Beginning, God"…
We suggest starting your day with Bible study and provide the lesson plans for you to do so. You will be exposed to the whole counsel of God's Word, and share your faith clearly with your children. All Truth, wisdom, and understanding starts with scripture, so you will also see a Christian perspective integrated in all subject areas.
Math
How will you teach Math?
1) Hands On - Math-U-See does an amazing job of creating visual or hands on experiences.
2) On Pace - Your children will learn at different paces. You can speed up or slow down a you see fit.
3) Projects - We supplement Math-U-See to make sure you have project ideas every day.
Portals has designed Math lesson plans based off of the Math-U-See curriculum. You will be able to "Do" something with the concepts a student is reading about. Math-U-See does 'hands-on' better than any other Math curriculum. Each level includes integrated manipulatives that allow learners to see what they are calculating. The Math-U-See placement test can be found at this link.
Reading
How will you teach Reading?
1) Daily - Simple, regular, exposure to lots of reading will leverage natural learning.
2) Proven - Pathway Reader uses both phonics and repetition. Later readers leverage volume or practice.
3) Practically - As soon as you're able, start reading more books! The best way to improve reading... is reading.
You will initially be using the Pathway Readers. Pathway Readers have been used successfully for decades with great effect. As students are able to start in on chapter books, you will promote them to Growers Reading.
Pathway reading level placement can be completed using this link.
Science
How will you teach Science?
1) Openly - Apologia and Berean Builders texts both address all evidence available and help you boldly show the wonders of God's creation.
2) Rigorously - You may be surprised at the level of vocabulary! Then you'll be surprised at how your children pick it up.
3) Visually - You will regularly have added visuals and videos across the Science curriculum. Show you can show and tell.
You will have lessons and texts that support a Christ-Centered worldview and never have to run from actual, observable, rational, scientific study and method. His attributes are clearly observable and have always been.
At all levels, you can select the Science that is most interesting to your child. As a discovery subject, fascination is key.
Each state has different high school graduation requirements. Check these or contact Hub Support to make sure you are meeting those requirements.
Literature
How you will teach Literature?
1) Prolifically - Your core for a literature based curriculum is your reading list!
2) Thoughtfully - You’ll have conversations starting with “Think” questions for each selection and projects that allow time to discuss and absorb content.
3) Intentionally - You have a book list filled with books about characters that learn and grow over time–setting up conversations about character, values, and faith.
Humans are designed to learn through stories, and everything we could possibly hope to learn can be found in a book. Portals sets you up with amazing, age-appropriate, literature that engages a student and allows them to be taught through story.
As students age, the literature helps you to start conversations. When challenging concepts or ideas are presented, you can discuss how they are understood through the Christian worldview that prepares them for standing firm in their faith.
History
How you will teach History?
1) Truthfully - You will have resources that tell the whole story without blackboxing faith and the impact of it in historical events.
2) Enthusiastically - Using projects your children can play with ideas and stories and characters and events throughout high school.
3) Patriotically - The American experiment is essentially a Christian idea, one that dignifies human life, liberty, and property.
You’ll approach history with materials unafraid to celebrate heroes, honor virtues, and recognize struggles. Portals equips you to focus on the principles of freedom, God, civics, character, and traditional principles of government. You’ll rotate between American History, Ancient History, and Modern History every three years, ‘looping’ back with more depth each time while allowing for multi-age learning.
Portals uses a variety of trusted texts, such as Notgrass, Story of the World, Sonlight, Novels, and Portal original content. Every lesson includes “Think” and “Do” projects to encourage reading the next day.
Sample Schedules
The length and schedule of the school day depends greatly on the needs of the students and the learning environment. Portals has created different resources to support a variety of different learning schedules. Download an example block schedule, a weekly schedule template, or the lesson plan progress checklist where you can check off each lesson for each subject as you go. These are only tools to help support the flexible schedule that works well for you and your students. The length of time spent completing the lesson plans for each subject will vary.
