Welcome to Portals!

We are excited you have chosen Portals, and we are looking forward to partnering with you to meet the educational needs and goals of your student(s). Once you have purchased your subscription, you can get set-up by completing the steps outlined below. These instructions will also be delivered to your email inbox in the days following the purchase of your subscription. If you have any questions, we have a team available to meet with you.  Portals is connecting the best resources in education to equip anyone to provide a Christ-centered education for their children. Education can be better, and it should be better!

Step 1: Start with Prayer

Any work of eternal value starts with prayer. Take time to pray and ground yourself in God’s calling. Prayer will help lead you through decisions related to your child’s education. Scriptures for prayer: Ephesians 6:1-4, Matthew 19:14, Matthew 18:2-6, Deut. 4:9-10

Step 2: Review Scope & Sequence

Take time to review the Portals Scope and Sequence. Be sure to note which year of the loop you will be joining the program. Portals’ History, Bible, Literature, and English courses follow a three-year content loop in which students cycle through three distinct years of content, and then repeat the cycle at a higher level with new texts and developmentally appropriate projects and assessment.

Step 3: Determine Placement

Learning Level - Portals uses a multi-age learning approach that allows you to teach your children of different ages and abilities together. Below is a description of each learning level:

1) Founders are early elementary students, typically ages 5-8, which focus on basic literacy, reading and writing, and building fine motor skills. The Christ-centered approach to our lesson plans helps them learn order, rhythm, work ethic, and to find joy in learning.

2) Growers are your late elementary students, typically ages 8-11. Growers have a focus on spiritual growth and learning the Bible. Students will be encouraged to develop spiritual habits such as praying, Bible study, and worship. The literature in this loop will have more of a focus on events and eras of history, and students will be working to build reading skill and speed.

3) Thinkers are middle school students, typically ages 11-14. Students in this loop will focus on developing reason and sound thinking. They’ll be introduced to a number of ideas and world turning characters. They will encounter conflicting ideas and develop an apologia, learning how to give a defense of their beliefs. They will be challenged to think Biblically about the world and build passion for Christ.

4) Leaders are high school students, typically 14-18, that will focus on interacting with the larger world. There will be less reading, but more difficult texts that highlight abstract ideas and theories. They will work on developing a godly character that encourages them to be bold, and unafraid in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They will focus on listening to and serving others, understanding current events, and getting involved in civics and local government. They will be training to lead, organize, host, and build connections to impact culture.

Math - Math is a sequential course that must be completed in order according to each individual child's skill level. You will need to complete placement testing with your child in order to determine which math course your student should complete.

Science - Science courses are all available every year. This is because many states require students to complete specific science courses, especially at the high school level. You have the option to choose whichever science class you would like your child to complete in the coming year, whether it’s preference or state mandate. Another important note about science is that the elementary science courses are unique in that they are designed to work for all ages of elementary students, so your Founders and Growers can complete their science course together.

English - Reading and writing must be learned in order, and skills will build on each other. If you have an early elementary student, or a student that is still learning the basic skills of reading and writing, you will need to complete a placement test with them in order to determine which course to start with. Once your student has learned to read, they’ll move on to the Growers level and begin to rotate through the Family Almanac Project, Gazette, and Novel in a Year courses. You can learn more about these courses by reading the course descriptions mentioned in step #4.

Step 4: Read Course Descriptions

Portals developed course descriptions to provide you with an overview of the coursework that your students will complete while participating in the Portals program. There are multiple courses in each disciplinary area including, Bible, History, Literature, Science, Math and English. Click the button to view the course descriptions for each learning level. You can also keep these and use them for recordkeeping.

Step 5: Collect Reading Materials

Portals provides a detailed book list, including ISBN #s, for each learning level every year. We leave the purchasing to you so you can find the best deal possible and save money. You can use these lists to purchase new books, find gently used books online, or use your public library to check them out for free.

  • Each book list indicates which lesson # you will begin using the text on. We do this to make it easier for you to spread out the cost of purchasing the materials and to allow you to use the public library option as well.

  • You will also see an * next to book titles that can be accessed for free online at projectgutenburg.com.

  • Some titles are hyperlinked because they can be harder to find (but not impossible!) and may have to be purchased directly from the publisher.

  • As a reminder, students will need to complete Math and Reading placement tests prior to purchasing these materials.

Step 6: Sign In to Your Dashboard

New Users: If this is your first time logging in to the Portals Dashboard, you will need to use the temporary credentials emailed to you upon sign-up. These will be in a separate email and will include both your username and password. You may need to check your spam folder for this email. Once you've logged-in, you will immediately be prompted to set your own personal password. Please email info@portalsedu.com if you have trouble finding or signing in with your temporary credentials.  Watch the video below for instructions on setting up and navigating your dashboard.

Returning Users: If you already have an account in the Portals Dashboard, you can use your original log-in credentials.

Step 7: Supplies

A supply list is provided for each course, for each learning level. These supply lists are chronological and provide the list of supplies needed for each lesson. Many of the items listed are general household items, however there may be some that you will need to search and find in order to complete the project. As a reminder, you are not required to complete every project listed in the lesson plans. You will likely need to pick and choose which projects you want to complete with your student, so you may not need to collect everything that is noted on these supply lists.

Step 8: Homeschool Support Team

Call our homeschool support team to talk with an experienced educator who can help you prepare for homeschooling and answer any of your initial questions! Our team is available Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, just schedule an appointment when it works best for you! We look forward to meeting you and supporting you in your journey of homeschooling.

Reminder!

Withdraw Child(ren) from School

Know the homeschool laws in your state before withdrawing your children from public or private school. The Homeschool Legal Defense Association is a great resource for understanding the laws and regulations of each state. If you have already withdrawn your child(ren) in order to homeschool in previous years, there are ongoing reporting requirements in most states.
