Welcome to Portals Projects! Each week we share projects that foster community building, creative thinking, problem-solving and character development. Invite your student(s) to pick a project that interests them to work on for a day or a week. Encourage them to share their plans, products or performances with the Portals community so we can all celebrate and grow together.
Week 30 - Sacrifice
1 Corinthians 5:7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
Passover Feast
The Jews were commanded to observe Passover every year and many continue to do so today. Jesus fulfilled Passover when He died on the cross for our sins even though He lived a sinless life. Learn more about Passover by attending a Messianic Seder.
Matzo Maneuver (Destination Imagination)
Challenge: You’re chefs at a restaurant and one of your customers is craving more and more matzo ball soup! Create one or more devices that can serve matzo balls to your hungry customer.
Setup: Create/select items to use for your matzo balls (e.g., Ping-Pong balls, golf balls, playdoh, bouncy balls). Try to use items that are of different sizes and weights. Have at least 10 ‘matzo balls’ and place them in a pot. Place a medium-size bowl approximately 10 feet from the pot.
Materials for Serving Device(s): 1 index card, 1 sheet of paper, 2 craft sticks, 2 chenille stems, 2 paper straws or pencils, 1 rubber band, 6 inches of tape
Yeet the Yeast
Challenge: Throw your sin as far away from you as you can by filling an old sock with flour and building a launcher to launch it as far as possible.
Materials: old sock filled with flour, launching materials (rubber bands, plastic spoons, cardboard, large paper or plastic cups, ruler, printer paper, wooden pencils, tape)
Spring Cleaning
I’m doing some spring cleaning and I’m having trouble deciding what to get rid of and how to get rid of it - sell, donate, throw away, burn. Do you have any tips you can share with me or could you invent a fun and simple system for letting go?
Names
Imagine you are an explorer and you have discovered a new land. A native woman gives birth to a son. You ask what the name of the new child is. Make a flowchart that illustrates how a person gets their name in this new land. It can be as realistic or fantastical as you want.
