Portals Projects - Seek Wisdom!

Welcome to Portals Projects! Each week we share projects that foster community building, creative thinking, problem-solving and character development. Invite your student(s) to pick a project that interests them to work on for a day or a week. Encourage them to share their plans, products or performances with the Portals community so we can all celebrate and grow together.

Week 24 - Wisdom

Proverbs 24:14 Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you,

and your hope will not be cut off.

Where’s Wise Waldo?

Design a performance about searching for wisdom and perform it at a nursing home or senior living center. It should include at least one song, a foolish character and at least three very different settings.

Letters to Yourself

Write a series of letters to yourself containing advice and wisdom for each future stage of life. Write a letter for yourself 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, 25 years and 60 years from now.  Ask your friends and family who are older than you for advice to include for your future self.  Put your letters in a lock box or safety deposit box at the bank so they don’t get lost!

The Wise Man built his House

Challenge: Using the materials below, have every member in your group each build a house that will survive the storms of life - transport, thunder, wind, and rain.

Materials: 8 pieces of paper, 6 chenille stems (pipe cleaners), 1 12in (31cm) piece of foil, 2 cardboard tubes, 8 straws, 4 craft sticks, 1 small paper cup, 8 mailing labels or 12 inches (31cm) of tape, 1 6in (15cm) piece of string,

Scoring:

  1. 25 points if your house can move 3 feet.

  2. 25 points if your house can survive being 3 ft away from a slammed door.

  3. 25 points if your house can survive being blown on from a foot away.

  4. 25 points if your house can survive a ¼ cup of water being dumped on it.

Retired but Not tired

My grandparents just retired but they are not tired of working and helping people. What is one way that they could help you in your learning?

Stories

Imagine you are an explorer and you have discovered a new land. One evening you ask one of the locals how their people came to live in this land. Write down their version of creation or the flood.  It can be as realistic or fantastical as you want.
