Educator Training
An educator training program was created to provide you and your team with support as you begin the year with Portals! Whether you are new to education or have many years of experience, our trainings will provide you with important information on how to effectively use Portals resources to foster a healthy and engaging learning environment.
Administrators have the option to receive training progress reports for the teachers in their school if they would like to make this training mandatory for their staff. If, after completing the educator training program, you have additional questions or topics that you would like us to address, please let us know and we will create additional training content to share with you and the rest of the Portals community.

Classroom Placement
Math Placement:
"The Math-U-See Curriculum can be used successfully in classrooms as a core curriculum or as a supplementary means to closing skill gaps. Since Math-U-See does not use traditional grade levels, students can be placed in the appropriate level based on their individual level of mastery without negatively impacting their confidence.
The placement process provides the means to assess a student’s basic computational skills and concept mastery to determine the best entry level in the Math-U-See Curriculum. Individual testing for placement is ideal, but testing can be done in a group setting if accompanied by careful observation."
Reading Placement: Reading placement only needs to be completed for Founders level students. It is assumed that Growers, Thinkers, and Leaders have mastered basic reading and writing skills and will continue to develop these skills through selected literature and Portals writing curriculum. Educators who will be teaching early elementary should complete the Reading Pathways Placement Testing with each of their students to gauge skill level and comprehension.
Reading Materials
Portals Christian Schools must provide reading materials, as well as, basic school supplies, project supplies, and computers. Supply lists can be found in the lesson plans or on the Hub Support page of the website. A book list with recommended ISBN #'s and links to publisher websites can be viewed by clicking on the book list buttons below. Purchase orders can be emailed to info@portalsacademy.com. Consider the following when obtaining reading materials for your school or classroom:
-
Read-Alouds: Portals encourages educators to read some books aloud to students. The book lists linked below indicate whether a book is intended to be read aloud to students, or whether it is for students to read on their own. Use this information as a guide to determine how many copies of each book are needed in each classroom.
-
Free Online Resources: There are many pieces of classic literature incorporated into the Portals lesson plans, and many of these can be found as free audio or print resources online.
-
Placement Testing: Know which level of Math and Reading materials each student will need before ordering.
-
Online Retailers: A book list is available for each learning level on Amazon. These links are provided in the book list downloads below. Not all books will be available on Amazon, so you may also need to buy directly from publishers who do not sell on third party websites. Some retailers may provide a quantity discount for schools based on size of your order.
-
Supplies & Book Drive: Use your local church or faith community to collect the books and materials that you need. This will help significantly to reduce the cost of materials you need to purchase. Download and customize our Book Drive PowerPoint template to reach your community.
